Halle Berry Drops Out of Broadway Play Over Custody Issues

After a short and dramatic custody battle earlier this year between Halle Berry and her ex-boyfriend, Gabriel Aubry, things between the two seemed to have calmed down. But now it seems that trouble has, once again, arisen between the former couple after reports emerged that Berry has dropped out of an upcoming Broadway play to deal with new custody issues.

According to nytimes.com, Berry was set to star in the award-winning play The Mountaintop. Written by Katari Hall and directed by Kenny Leon, The Mountaintop is an imagined account of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s final hours, the night before his assassination.

In the play, Berry was to play the character of Camae, a mysterious hotel maid at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis who visits the civil rights activist just hours before his tragic murder.

Although Berry has exited The Mountaintop, the play will still boast another acting heavy hitter, Samuel L. Jackson, who will portray Dr. King in the production.

This isn’t the first time Berry has left an acting job due to custody issues. Back in January, Berry walked away from a role as a caterer in the upcoming film New Year’s Eve to focus on custody litigation after Aubry filed court papers for joint custody, child support and to be formally recognized as the father of the pair’s 2-year-old daughter, Nahla. Berry rejoined the film mid-February, now cast in a different role as a nurse in the film.

The Mountaintop will run at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater, with previews beginning on Sept. 22 and the opening on Oct. 13.
