The Redland Discusses the Power of Being an Independent Hip-Hop Collective

During their years at Morehouse College, Kose and Earv Legend would dabble in music for fun. But while they were experimenting, they soon developed chemistry and began creating music that caught the attention of many of their peers. They eventually decided to establish themselves as a group and formed The Redland. With a unique blend of hip-hop and R&B, The Redland is poised to take their careers to the next level. –amir shaw

Take us back to the first time you guys recorded together. What was the experience like?
Earv: The first time we hit the studio, it was an empowering experience. We knew that we could do it ourselves. It was cool to make music of decent quality without having to go to someone  else’s studio to record.

How have people responded to your unique blend of hip-hop and R&B?
Kose: We get pretty good feedback. We embody the great collaborations in hip-hop. We take two elements and put it together. Every track is a combination of different artists who influenced us in the past.

Why did you decided to remain independent instead of signing with a major label?
Kose: We have control. The more control you [have], the better. We can distribute music directly to our fans. We have an advantage through technology. It’s an international store. Work on your craft and understand the power is yours.

Earv: We’re in a good position because of social media. We also had a song placement on the video game NBA2K11. We have passionate fans in different countries. We’ve sold music all over the world. We’re not looking for anything. We’re blessed to be in a position to put music out [that will] garner attention.
