Los Angeles Laker Matt Barnes has ended his relationship with Gloria Govan, the mother of his twin boys.
In an emailed statement to the media, Barnes wrote: “I’d like to address the rumors surrounding mine and Gloria’s relationship. We have reached the difficult decision of ending our relationship and will be going our separate ways at this time. We will work together to raise our sons and wish each other only the best.”
In what was perhaps a foretelling of the breakup, last week, a fan chided Barnes on Twitter for not marrying Govan, implying that someone else might just scoop her up, to which Barnes responded, “He can have her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
On Oct. 22 Govan retweeted: “If someone is dumb enough to walk away, be smart enough to let them go. Your destiny is never tied to anyone who leaves you.”
Apparently, there’s no love lost between those two.
Barnes and Govan’s tumultuous relationship has been fascinating to watch, first on “Basketball Wives,” and now on the spin-off, “Basketball Wives LA.” The couple, who had numerous false starts on their way down the aisle, never did get the deed done. Barnes was arrested for domestic abuse in 2010, but the charges were dropped due to lack of evidence.
While the demise of a relationship is always sad when children are involved, the Barnes-Govan union might not have been the healthiest environment in which to guide impressionable young minds.
There’s no word on how the pair’s assets will be split.
In the future, perhaps reality shows will consider casting actual wives in shows that carry the word “wives” in the title. Just a thought.
