Aretha Franklin Calls Off Engagement

It looks like the Queen of Soul won’t be walking down the aisle anytime soon. Less than a month ago, Aretha Franklin happily announced that she was engaged to marry her “forever friend,” William “Willie” Wilkerson, now she has called off the engagement.

According to the Associated Press, Franklin made the announcement on Jan. 23 via a statement to the press, claiming she and Wilkerson weren’t ready to be married just yet.

“Will and I have decided we were moving a little too fast, and there were a number of things that had not been thought through thoroughly. There will be no wedding at this time,” Franklin said. “We will not comment on it any further because of the very personal and sensitive nature of it. We appreciate all of the many well wishes from friends.”

News of Franklin’s decision to cancel the wedding comes as a surprise becuase earlier this month, she was speaking the Associated Press about her happiness over her impending wedding, the fun of trying on Vera Wang and Donna Karan wedding gowns and her hope for a summer wedding in Miami or the Hamptons in upstate New York.

And most important, Franklin seemed happy about living out the rest of her life married to Wilkerson.

“We’re very compatible, and he supports me and I support him a lot, and he has given me specialized attention that I don’t think I’ve received from anyone else,” said Franklin.

It’s unclear whether Franklin and Wilkerson are still romantically involved. We hope that things work out well for Franklin and her “forever friend,” whatever they decide to do. Below, you can check out our list of other celebs who got cold feet before jumping the broom.
