‘Food Stamp Friday’ Promoted at Alabama Nightclub

'Food Stamp Friday' Promoted at Alabama Nightclub

Is there no more shame left in the world? A nightclub in Montgomery, Ala., has come up with a ridiculous theme night for underprivileged families: the manager is offering discount entry for food stamp recipients.

The Rose Supper Club in Alabama’s capital city will start “Food Stamp Friday” theme nights in April.

People who are on food stamps and want to party, need to present a food stamp card and will pay just a $5 cover charge, reports the Daily Caller.

Manager Harman Wilson says the night is part of the club’s other theme nights, such as Fat Tuesday, Karaoke Wednesday or Thirsty Thursday.

For real?!? Food Stamp Fridays?

Wilson says patrons will not be able to use their food stamps to buy alcoholic beverages. He says he hopes the novel approach will draw people to the club. There was nothing in the statement about helping food stamp recipients or helping them to enter the work force.

The Alabama Human Resources Department is not amused. No surprises there. Spokesman Barry Sparks says the department does not approve of the promotion. He says food assistance benefits are meant to provide nourishment for hungry families.

Even some of the Rose Supper Club’s employees are opposed to the gimmick.

“Now that’s hurting somebody’s feelings,” Richard Thomas is quoted as saying to the media. “Name this party something else.”

Anything else.
