Miss Domincan Republic Forced to Give Up Her Crown for Being Married, Other Dethroned Beauty Queens

Organizers of the Miss Dominican Republic pageant are reeling today after the winner of their exhibition was discovered to be married. Carlina Duran is being forced to relinquish her crown for breaking the marital status rule. The winner of the “Miss” pageant must be a single woman and not a “Mrs.”

A local newspaper broke the story on Wednesday, April 25, that Duran, a spa owner, was married and had been since 2009.

Speaking through her lawyer, Radhames Cornielle, Duran issued a statement saying, “In my daily life, I remained like a single woman, without thinking of myself [as] neither materially nor spiritually married.”

Duran called the hiding of her marriage the “fruit of my inexperience.”

She and her husband are said to have previously started annulment proceedings, proceedings that were never finished.

The 25-year-old took home the coveted crown April 17 beating out 24-year-old Dulcita Lieggi for the first place position. Lieggi will now represent the country in the upcoming Miss Universe pageant this December.
