Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, 18th Congressional District of Texas and the Department of Health and Human Services regional director Marjorie McColl Petty, J.D., M.S. showed their appreciation for the work of the Good Neighbor Healthcare Center by taking a tour of the facility and presenting a $5 million check to Good Neighbor’s executive director Janet Donath.
Health and Human Services secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee announced the grant which was made possible by the new health care law that will help to build, expand and improve community health centers nationwide. “President Obama’s health care law is making our community health centers stronger,” said Secretary Sebelius. “For many Americans, community health centers are the major source of care that ranges from prevention to treatment of chronic diseases. This investment will expand our ability to provide high quality care to millions of people while supporting good paying jobs in communities across the country.”
Good Neighbor Healthcare Center was one of 13 health care clinics in Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee District-D in Texas and the only clinic in Harris County to receive the Building Capacity Grant. The federal grant from the Health Resources Services Administration, an arm of the department of Health and Human Services, is a major component of a $19 million campaign to build a 45,000 square-foot, state-of- the-art facility with room for future expansion. The environmentally friendly design will provide primary health care for over 13,000 patients in its first year of service.
