Russell Simmons and Questlove Battle in Obama Fundraiser Competition

While President Obama fends off Republican challenger Mitt Romney this election season, Russell Simmons and Questlove are going head to head.

The two hip hop icons are trying to see who can raise the most money for Obama’s reelection campaign.

So far it’s a route,  but not in the way you think. Questlove, the Roots lead man and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon drummer, has raised 73 percent of the funds, with the Def Jam founder coming in at a distant 26 percent.

Simmons tweeted three days ago, “Questlove is bustin’ my a** in this fundraising competition for @BarackObama. I need people to join my team! HELP”

“Get involved quick! Don’t let @barackobama down, help me outraise @UncleRUSH,” Questlove tweeted to his followers.

Russell Simmons used his sounding board, Global Grind, last month to blast Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan. He said Romney and Ryan “will destroy our people and laugh all the way to the bank.”

Questlove hasn’t been as outspoken, but The Roots drummer called it “an honor” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in April.
