What prompted you to start this cancer walk?

The First Annual Terry Bello Cancer Walk for Hope was created out of a desire to not only bring awareness to individuals battling cancer, but also to raise funds in support of lifesaving research. This walk also acknowledges and honors all those who fought hard to win the battle against this disease. This annual walk will serve as a catalyst for change. Change that not only educates society on the various forms of cancer, but also on the importance of early detection.

Are you personally affected by it?

On April 1, 2012, I was diagnosed with a form of cancer called Multiple Myeloma. This particular type of cancer, more commonly found in African American men, affects approximately 20,000 men and women each year. I am fortunate in that my doctors were able to identify my illness in its early stage and tailor a plan of treatment specific to my health needs. With the tremendous advances in modern medicine, treatment options are allowing individuals to live longer and more fulfilled lives. In addition to medical treatment, I have implemented, with the support of my medical team, a healthier active lifestyle which is playing a vital role in my overall recovery process.

Who/what (specifically) will the proceeds benefit?

The walk is sponsored by the Morehouse School of Medicine Cancer Research Program, The Peoples Station V-103, rolling out Weekly, The Georgia Lottery and Real Men Wear Pink. All proceeds from the First Annual Terry Bello Cancer Walk for Hope will benefit The Morehouse School of Medicine Cancer Research Program to increase cancer awareness, promote the importance of early detection, and provide support and resources to men and women in our local community who are newly diagnosed or facing recurrence of all kinds of cancer.
