LAPD's gun buyback racks up hundreds of guns

In the wake of the devastating Sandy Hook school shootings, many across the nation have complained about gun violence and the need for stricter gun regulations. And on Dec. 26, the LAPD hosted a gun buyback in in Van Nuys, CA, which brought in hundreds of guns from neighborhood residents.

According to the Daily Breeze, before the gun buyback began at 9 a.m., a line of cars had already formed outside of the Van Nuys Masonic Center. Drivers went through the parking lot and popped their trunks as police took their guns in exchange for $100 to $200 in Ralphs gift cards, and by 10 a.m. police had already collected 195 guns.

Of the guns turned in by 9:50 a.m., police say they received 50 handguns, 80 rifles and 45 shotguns. Police also say they received two fully automatic TEC-9s, a common gun for gang members, along with an AK-47 and a Bushmaster rifle, the same brand used in Newtown, Conn.

And though some think the event was a “fraud” or an inadvertent way to disarm people that need guns to defend themselves, Lee Bramer, who turned in a .22 caliber says that he’s happy to see more guns out of the streets.

“Any time we can take guns off the street, it’s better and safer,” he said, referring to the Sandy Hook shooting, “I’ve got a 5-year-old grandson. I wouldn’t want to see anything like that happen out here.”

Well, Bramer is definitely not alone in his stance about gun violence and gun control. Check out some other stars with a similar view below. – nicholas robinson
