'Gangster Squad' movie review

Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, Emma Stone

In 1949, Los Angeles, ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob boss Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show, reaping all of the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, guns, prostitutes and if fate permits, every wire bet placed west of Chicago; all while under the watchful eye of his own paid goons, police and politicians. It’s enough to intimidate the bravest, street-hardened cop, except, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders headed by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to tear Cohen’s world apart. Gangster Squad is a colorful tale of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their city from one of the most dangerous mafia kings of all time. – ruthie hawkins
