From TLC to the Rolling Stones: 10 Legends robbed by the music business

Sam & Dave

The biggest-selling duo in R&B history, Sam Moore and David Prater are fondly remembered as stars from the legendary Memphis-based Stax Records, but they were actually never signed to Stax. Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records “loaned” the duo to the hitmaking label, unbeknownst to both Stax and the duo themselves. Once they became a chart-topping act, Atlantic snatched them back and revealed that they still owned all the rights to their music. The legal wrangling permanently disrupted Sam & Dave’s run of hits and began the slow disintegration of Stax.
