Rape, rappers and revisionism: Being honest about hip-hop misogyny

tip-drill

We want to believe that hip-hop is only “real hip-hop” when it espouses positivity, but the history of the genre proves otherwise. Are these artists not hip-hop? Maybe not, according to some “purists.” But anyone who is familiar with the genre knows that these aren’t the only examples of misogyny, and it’s not hard to see why we’re at the point where one of the most famous rappers in the world can rap about drugging and raping a woman without seeming to think he did anything wrong.

Simply put — rappers rap about doing horrible things to women all the time.

What’s the big deal, right? We’re just talking about a non-virtuous woman. A groupie. A “ho.” A “b—h.” Even 2Pac explained in 1996’s “Wonda Why They Call U B—h” that these kinds of women get what they deserve. Whether that be an HIV infection, a beatdown or date-raped — hip-hop says, “She had it coming.”
