OBLIVION
STARS: TOM CRUISE, MORGAN FREEMAN, OLGA KURYLENKO, ANDREA RISEBOROUGH,
MELISSA LEO

The setting for this sci-fi adventure is 60 years after Earth was attacked and nearly destroyed by aliens. Although it’s a stretch to call it a “victory,” since much of the planet is a wasteland and uninhabitable. Every human being on the planet has been evacuated. Tom Cruise plays Jack, a security and maintenance officer assigned to repair drones and respond to threats. His pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is to complete his tasks and join the evacuees. While on an assignment to check out an object that parachuted into one of the sectors, Jack is captured by Beech (Morgan Freeman) who informs him that “the people you work for lied to you.” Well, we know at least one lie was told because Beech appears to have a small army with him, so not everybody was evacuated. What else has Jack been misled about? We can’t tell tales out of school, but suffice it to say that you’ll have plenty of fun unraveling the mystery. Strong performances, great special effects and the only chance to see Tom Cruise in a movie this year make this a must-see film. –p.d. lee
