Lauryn Hill saved from jail by 5-song, $1 million Sony deal

Lauryn Hill

She hasn’t released an album in over a decade but there are still plenty of people that believe in the talents of Ms. Lauryn Hill.

Apparently, many of those people hold influential positions with major labels. The Grammy-award winning rapper-singer-songwriter has reportedly landed a $1 million deal with Sony that only requires that she submit five songs. Following the five songs, she will also be available to receive  additional funds for recording and promoting a full album of new material.

The news is perfect for Hill, who was given a two-week extension on Monday, April 22nd, to pay off her outstanding tax debts. If she had failed to meet the deadline, it is likely that the former Fugee would have been sentenced to at least three years in prison for pleading guilty to three counts of tax evasion.

Hill owes $504,000 in taxes, so the Sony deal would cover that debt.

The singer has  not recorded since 2002. Her last album, Unplugged 2.0, was an acoustic, live set of songs that she never gave a proper studio recording. Her acclaimed 1998 solo debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, was a commercial blockbuster and won her numerous awards, including the Grammy for Album of the Year.
