Jason Collins and other pro athletes who have recently come out

Jason Collins - Gay Athletes Cover

The world of sports is (relatively) on the fast track to change as NBA free agent Jason Collins made the decision to come out in now-famous Sports Illustrated interview, making him the first active player in NBA history to ever come out as openly gay.

With the glass ceiling for gays in sports having been cracked and the closet door opened even wider, expect to see even more sports stars come out of the closet in the near future.

But while you wait for the next sports star to make the big, brave and admirable step, check out some other athletes who have come out in the past year below. – nicholas robinson

People do not want know nor do they care to know your business. All that matters if you can play that ball. It doesn’t matter would kind of bed partner you are.

    Who cares!!!!
I think it’s great he doesn’t have to hide who he is anymore.

I’m sad that this is major news.
He was the same outstanding player yesterday and it won’t change today.
If any thing he’ll be a better player because he can focus on the game and not all that judgemental garbage.

I don’t believe fans are that shallow to think Jason or any other professional athelete’s sexual orientation effects their love and commitment to the game.

Why promote it by “coming out”? You should have nothing to “come out” to. Heterosexuals don’t “come out” so why promote yourself in this way. If this was your choice, it was unnecessary to make a media announcement.

Respectfully, lesbian athletes coming out isn’t exactly earth shattering…they tend to play in the most likely places you’d find them anyway, not to mention look the part (let’s keep it funky), so it’s just a matter of time…

The gay male athletes, however, especially when they’re still young enough to be relevant, that’s much different. Too bad Wade Davis, Kwame Harris, and probably Jason Collins, aren’t anymore.
