New Orleans federal and police authorities have identified Akein Scott, 19, as a shooter in the Mother’s Day Parade this past Sunday.  He is suspected of opening fire during the parade wounding 19 people. Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas, was the one who identified Scott on the surveillance camera images of the shooting. Serpas stated that it was too early to know if Scott was the only shooter.

Akein Scott was previously arrested for illegal possession of a stolen firearm, resisting a police officer, illegal carrying of a weapon while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of heroin.  It still is not clear whether Akein has been actually convicted on any of the charges against him.

Today, the police department released the images from the shooting of Scott along with a reward of $10,000; both of these things have led to many tips from the community. Serpas said, “ The people today, chose to be on the side of the young innocent children who were shot and not on the side of a coward who shot into the crowd.” Three of the shooting victims were still in critical condition on Monday, even though the wounds do not appear to be life threatening at the moment.

Since this was not the first shooting that had taken place during festivities, a few people from the community have begun to speak up about the recent acts of gun violence. Ronald Lewis, 61, on Monday said, “ The old people are scared to walk the streets and children can’t even play outside.”  The president of the ladies group of the Original Four Social Aid and Pleasure Club said, “This code of silence has to end. If we stand up and speak out maybe this kind of thing will stop.”
