“Only 13.4 percent of the Danish population and 10 percent of Norwegians are obese, and Icelanders have a 50 percent lower death rate from heart disease and diabetes than North Americans,” Dr. Daphne Miller, MD, the author of The Jungle Effect: The Healthiest Diets from Around the World says. The three steps to their healthy lifestyles are:
- Choosing the best bread. Rye is the bread of choice in the Nordic region. According to Katherine Tallmadge, RD, the author of Diet Simple. “Choosing rye bread, which includes soluble fiber make you feel full while helping to lower cholesterol and glycemic response, causing less glucose in the bloodstream, which means fewer blood sugar spikes and cravings.
- Stick with fish. It is said that Danish people eat fish twice as much as Americans making it their main source of protein. The fish of choice includes herring, tuna, salmon, mackerel and cod.
- Buy all produce fresh, preferably from the Farmers Market. Fresh veggies are used to makes meals more filing. They prepare them simple by roasting or stir-frying them.
