Acceptance for the LGBT community and same-sex marriage may be at an all-time high, there are some who still don’t agree with marriage equality. Recently, MMA fighter Josh Thomson turned to his Facebook page to discuss the topic and he blasted the idea of allowing same-sex couples to marry.

Thomson began his rant when he posed a question to his fans about the implications and boundaries of marriage equality.

“Should you be allowed to marry whoever you want? Before you answer that, should you be allowed to have more than one wife?” asked Thomson.

Of course, a debate ensued and when a friend asked Thompson “Should you be allowed to decide what other sound-minded adults do with their lives?” Thompson responded that same-sex marriage is gateway to extreme, criminal unions.

“I’m only asking a question. My next question is, should siblings be allowed to marry siblings? My point is, where do you draw the line? I personally don’t care who you marry but I also am smart enough to know that it opens a gateway to men/women trying to marry young kids, siblings marrying each other and people having multiple husbands an wives. You have to think all of these things are okay otherwise your stopping them from being happy as well which is hypocrisy. Equality doesn’t stop with gay marriage, it just starts with it,” wrote Thomson.

When another friend compared marriage equality to allowing people of different races to marry, Thompson disagreed and, surprisingly, bashed controversial R&B star R. Kelly.

“Blacks and whites getting married is nothing like this. So you’re okay with R. Kelly trying to marry lil girls? People trying to marry their brother or sister? Animals? Etc? Those people want the same exact thing, to be happy. Are you gonna tell them no?” Thomson inquired.

However, Thomson’s comments didn’t sit to well with his fans, and after experiencing a backlash, Thomson issued an apology to his angered fans.

“I am not against gay rights or gay marriage in anyway,” stated Thomson. “My comments were completely taken out of context by some members of the media and I have since removed them out of respect for anyone who may have been offended. It was not my intention to offend or hurt anyone.”

Thomson may not be against same-sex marriage, but his ponderings were nothing short of ignorant. Equating same-sex marriage with incest, pedophilia and bestiality is misguided; it’s also an overused regurgitation of the same outdated and illogical arguments that have been used against marriage equality for years.
