A recent study by the University of California, Berkeley found that the Brazilian Blowout Acai Professional Smoothing Hair Solution contains potentially dangerous levels of formaldehyde, exceeding the limits set by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

Much of the concern derives from dangerous levels of formaldehyde affecting the air in salons while the hair solution is being installed. A safe percentage for hair stylists is 0.2 percent to protect both the stylist and client, but the product tested contained 12 percent formaldehyde to straighten hair.

It is of particular concern because the straightening process involves a special shampoo that opens hair cuticles, is combed through the hair and is left on for 30 minutes. The formaldehyde can permanently damage cells that produce hair growth.

Also, when heat is applied, the formaldehyde emits a vapor into the air causing watery eyes, runny nose and respiratory illness. Formaldehyde is also linked to cancer.

The straightening process has been around since 2005 and is popular among celebrities. Find out who they are.
