Stephen A. Smith blasted after blaming black people for Riley Cooper’s use of N-word

Stephen A. Smith revealed his thoughts on NFL player Riley Cooper’s use of the N-word on ESPN’s “First Take.”

“We all make mistakes. It forces me to look at my community and be intellectually honest about this. In sports, when we go into the locker room and we hear the music blaring … we hear pro athletes echoing these same words. Most in the black community would be hypocrites if we denied that we used the word ourselves. Obviously it’s different when we hear the word from someone outside of our community. With the level of comfort Riley Cooper used the word, what responsibility do we have when we use the word in the presence of people outside of our community? The black community must ask ourselves do we play a role in the ease that it comes out of other people’s mouth?” Smith said.

After the statement, Twitter users immediately responded to Smith’s thoughts.

This is terrible journalism. He did not blame black people. He simply said to CONSIDER that when you use it so freely it adds to the lessened sensitivity of the word. That happens to be 100% right. Also he said quote “that does not let Riley Cooper off the hook”

No, he mixed the issues and therefore turned the flashlight on black folks. What he’s talking about is an entirely different conversation that was inappropriate and irrelevant here.

Title is “After Blaming Black People” Wow. Talk about putting words in his mouth and trying to stir controversy by making stuff up. Not what Stephen A said

More or less, that’s what he implied.

Leave it to the sambo to find a way to use a vicious verbal attack against black folks as an opportunity to lecture black folks on personal responsibility.
