I helped create and curate the custom ringtones and then we started to develop more ideas. The ringtone program is going really well. All of the DJs and producers that were here tonight were part of the program. It all happened really organically. Sometimes when you pair artists with brands that [cohesion] doesn’t really happen. In this case, we were fortunate enough to have that happen.

What is the name of your ringtone?

“Friendly” and “Simple” are my ringtones. It’s a really interesting creative process. We were asked to choose words that represent us and our music as well as integrate with the brand. I come from the ’90’s hip hop production style; things were simple. Sort of like  DJ Premiere … Pete Rock; those are my inspirations. Those beats were simple but complex at the same time.

Where did you get the name Leggo?
My real name is David. The name Leggo was given to me by a friend of mine who used to run with a graffiti crew and I used to be an emcee. If you would catch me early enough in the morning, I would still have a couple of hot 16s [bars], so he called me Legendary and the way it works in hip-hop, you just keep cutting the names down. A good name should be given to you.
Musical inspirations?
Old soul and funk records. I come from the ’90’s era where you literally had to go to the records store and dig. Some jazz, afro-beat, that was my inspiration. Now I listen to everything; the creative process is always changing.
