Iconic actor-director Robert De Niro is celebrating his 70th birthday today. The New York City native is one of the most acclaimed actors of all time, and for good reason. Since the early 1970s, “Bobby” has wowed audiences and critics with his wide-ranging and intense performances. He’s become especially well-known for playing tough guys and sociopaths; but a quick look at his filmography reveals an actor who has consistently challenged himself personally and professionally in a diverse array of roles.

De Niro has showcased his comedy chops (and knack for self-parody) in films like Midnight Run, Wag the Dog, and Meet the Parents, he took an unexpected turn as Frankenstein’s monster in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and portrayed bumbling sidekick to Samuel L. Jackson in Jackie Brown. He’s also directed two major motion pictures, A Bronx Tale and The Good Shepherd.
