“American Idol” season 10 contestant Ashthon Jones is building an incredible buzz, and pretty quickly. She was featured on Lecrae’s Grammy Award-winning album, MayDay, Big Krit’s single, “Good Together”, and now on first lady Michelle Obama’s hip-hop album for the Let’s Move! campaign. An amazing talent, she recently shared what makes her who she is outside of the studios, and off of the stages.

Having caught up with her recently during a recording session in Atlanta, she revealed some details about her latest projects. –tawni fears

Please define your personal brand.
Ashthon Jones is astronomically out of this world! Like coloring outside of the lines, she was born to be different.

What affirmations do you repeat to yourself that contribute to your success?
I’m motivated by my surroundings. Life won’t stop because of a hit song on the radio. I always slow down and look back at the things that got me here in the first place. Prayer and meditation is a daily routine. Gotta have it!

Name two of you top role models: one from you industry and one from outside of it.
One of my biggest role models in the music industry has to be Beyonce. Although I love many musical icons like: Nicki Minaj, Mary J, Alicia Keys, Aaliyah, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Jennifer Lopez, Etta James, Ray Charles, & many gospel legends too, Beyonce is the perfect example of a great musical role model. Kerry Washington plays a big role in my life because of her amazing accomplishments in the film industry. I look up to her in many ways!

Name three books, works, performances, or exhibits that changed how you view life and/or yourself.
There have been multiple things in my life that I’ve learned from, but one of the most amazing moments was in 2011 during my idol journey. I was faced with the wild card performance and literally had to sing my way to the top! I learned what the world truly wanted to see, and that was passion perseverance! Anyone can sing, but only a few can change lives. My first travel out of the country was an out-of-body experience. Seeing the world helped me realize how blessed I was in my own country. Although it was the most beautiful sites to see, I saw many families living in poverty.

What is your favorite vacation destination and why?
My favorite vacation destination is Italy! It’s by far the sexiest place I’ve ever been. I love water, but I’d rather have wine than a beach!

What role does technology play in your day-to-day life? How do you utilize it?
I’m a true media junky, so I use it all. From iPhones, to iPads, and computers, I can’t live without technology. If I lost one, I would cry! I love keeping my supporters updated on my musical journeys, and I always share my life.

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
If I had the power change anything about the world, there would be no crime.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
If I could change one thing about myself it would be, nothing! Obviously God wanted me to be this way, good and bad.
