After being shot, a 10-year-old girl waited five hours for treatment because her parents thought her blood was from her period. According to reports by KPIX in San Francisco, the 10 year-old girl was shot by a stray bullet from outside the home while sleeping.

The girl woke up around 2:00 a.m. and told her parents she was experiencing pain. The girl’s mother believed that the blood was caused by her being on her period and gave her a maxi pad. She then told the girl to go back to sleep.

When the girl woke up again five hours later still in pain and bleeding, her mother called authorities and rushed the girl to the hospital. A bullet wound was discovered and the girl had successful surgery.

The police questioned the parents about why they weren’t called earlier. The girl’s father told police that they always hear gunshots in their neighborhood and police are rarely called.

Authorities looked into removing the 10-year-old girl from the home and charging her parents with neglect. However, the child’s family doctor told authorities it was believable the family could have made the mistake because the bullet wound was small.

Police have decided against charging her parents.
