Billy Corgan’s crew had been marketed as the “next Nirvana” when they debuted at the height of the grunge boom in 1991. But on their second album, the Pumpkins fully emerged as stars in their own right–and with a sound far too lush and expansive to be reduced to simply “grunge.” They would go on to become one of the premier bands of the 1990s.
