‘My Crazy Roommate’s’ Laila Odom talks theater, dance and social media

Sitcom guru Bentley Kyle Evans who tickled our funny bones with “Martin” and “The Jamie Foxx Show”  teamed up with Bounce TV and created the original sitcom, “My CrazyRoommate,” which stars beautiful actress Laila Odom as Brooke, who’s laid back, unsympathetic and a hot mess. Art imitating life, she hails from New York.


Here, the producer and Rutgers University graduate, who says that this opportunity to work with Evans and the amazing cast and crew has been one of the best experiences she’s had so far in Hollywood, talks inspiration and her love of theater and dance.


Do you most often actively seek inspiration or does it find you? Or is there a combination of the two?
Most of the time inspiration finds me. I love to people watch and travel thats when I find the most inspiration.

What led you to art in general and to your art form(s) in particular?
At a very young age, I was drawn to the performing arts: theater and dance. It was a way for me to express myself.


How do you stay at the leading edge of your craft?
I stay on the leading edge of my craft by staying in the know and truly studying the art and the business. I also, participate in classes and I work with my peers in independent projects to work on my craft

Do you think that there are any widely held misconceptions about art and/or artists? If so, what are they and how do you work to dispel them?
Most people don’t truly understand how much work goes into becoming successful.

Who do you consider to be your peers in your field? Who do you see/use as examples for you to emulate?
I love what Raven-Symoné has been able to do in comedy.

Name three books, works, performances or exhibits that changed how you view life and/or yourself.

  1. Seeing “Revelations” performed by Alvin Ailey Dance Company at City Center (New York)
  2. School Daze by Spike Lee
  3.  Tisha Campbell in “Martin”

Why do you consider continued learning important?
In any field continued learning is required. If you want to stay in the know and relevant [smiles].

What role does technology play in your day-to-day life? How do you utilize it?
Social media has become so important… I’m not as active as I should be, but I’m getting there!

What software, app or other technological innovation has made the biggest difference in your life and/or career?
Vine has become more important in comedy.

“Sexy is short-lived; funny is forever.”

What is your favorite vacation destination and why?
The beautiful beaches of Anguilla.
