It’s a “real reflection of us”

Being Mary Jane was inspired by the real life experiences of Mara Brock Akil and her fellow black female peers. According to Union that makes it especially important for us tune is.

“It’s important to see ourselves reflected accurately and authentically on screen,” Union told rollingout. “I just wanted to add to the group of black women who are blazing trails and kicking butt.”

“We always say I wanna see myself reflected on TV,” she added. “‘I wanna see the people that I know’, this is the show for you. You will see all the good that happens in our lives, and all the bad and everything in between. It is a real working woman’s struggle to have it all.”
