The Georgia Coalition of Black Women (GCBW) hosted its National Women’s History Month luncheon at The Carter Center to honor women policy makers who exhibit character, courage and commitment, to tribute the late Evelyn Gibson Lowery and to provide a platform for women policy makers to bring greetings and highlight legislative agenda.

2014 honorees included women from the Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed’s cabinet: Cathy Hampton, Jo Ann J. Macrina, Katrina Taylor Parks, Amy Phuong, Gwendolyn A. Smith, Kristin Canavan Wilson, and Yvonne Cowser Yancey.

Rita Samuels, founder of Georgia Coalition of Black Women, felt it an honor to have played a role in empowering black women throughout Georgia who are now serving in leadership positions in the public and private sectors and among its many contributions to the community, feel especially honored to sponsor the Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy.

Attendees also included Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery, Ambassador Andrew Young, Deidre Brown Collins of the National Council of Negro Women, state Senator Nan Orrock, state representative Dee Dawkins-Haigler, Hartsfield-Jackson Airport’s Myrna White and Helen Butler.

The music theme for the day was Pharrell Williams’ popular single from Despicable Me soundtrack, “Happy.”
