Rolling out reached out to Upshaw and here is an update on the #NoKungFu movement.
NEXT STEPS:
A lot of people have asked what our next steps are, and what we’re hoping to achieve. When we started out on this journey, we created clear, actionable goals, and I want to give you updates on those goals, along with what we need from you:
Goal 1: To get Kung Fu Saloon Dallas to acknowledge that they have been systematically discriminating against people of color in Dallas, Houston and Austin.
Status: They haven’t acknowledged it, but with the media storm we’ve ignited there’s no way people can ignore that Kung Fu Saloon has engaged in discrimination, and that will leave an indelible mark on their reputation. They’ve been exposed in the news in multiple cities, and when you google them, articles about their racism are first to show up.
Goal 2: To get Kung Fu (and other bars in the area) to follow the law, which states that if an establishment has a dress code, it must be posted clearly, and cannot discriminate based on race.
Status: Despite the fact that it was printed on an inkjet and copied & pasted from the Austin Public School system, and taped to the front door, Kung Fu FINALLY posted their dress code. This is a HUGE win, because people (including media outlets) have been trying to get this info from them for over a year. That alone is a major success, and we should be proud of ourselves.
Goal 3: To get the city of Dallas to hear our complaints and petition, and for them to crack down on establishments who are violating the law.
Status: This is where you come in. We are planning on requesting time to speak at the next city council meeting, and we want all of you there. We want them to hear our stories of discrimination. We want them to see our petition (currently 600 signatures strong) and see that they need to take action. We’ll keep you guys updated on when that will be, but in the meantime, SHARE THIS PETITION! We want to show them that we have numbers and we mean business!
Comment YES if you’re dedicated to helping make sure Dallas enforces these laws!
Thanks for your support, everyone. Let’s keep ‪#‎NoKungFu‬ moving forward!
