“Whitney” an Angela Bassett-directed film presented by Lifetime, has officially received a premiere date. The made-for-TV flick, starring former “Americas Next Top Model” contestant Yaya DaCosta as Whitney Houston, will premiere in January.

Viewers can anticipate a good dose of drama as “Whitney” examines the tumultuous relationship between the late diva and her former husband, New Edition singer Bobby Brown, from the moment their eyes met to the day they said “I do.” Arlen Escarpeta (Star Trek Into the Darkness) portrays Brown.

Performing Houston’s vocals is Canadian R&B singer-songwriter and actress Deborah Cox. Some of the songs featured in the movie include some of Houston’s biggest hits, like “The Greatest Love of All,” “I Will Always Love You,” “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” “I’m Every Woman” and Brown’s “Every Little Step.”

Prior to the premiere, Lifetime will air an hourlong documentary “Beyond the Headlines: Whitney Houston,” featuring interviews with friends, colleagues and industry insiders as they provide insight into Houston’s career and the tragic circumstances surrounding her decline.

“Whitney” will premiere Jan. 17, 2015, at 8 p.m. on Lifetime. Will you be watching? –ruu hawkins/@ruubabie
