Each year, the new year rolls around and people begin to acknowledge where they went wrong.

They step into a new chapter holding onto that “failure,” extend their list of resolutions, but unknowingly set themselves up for more disappointment by ignoring old bad habits.

For five reasons New Year’s resolutions fail, and possible solutions for making this year more successful, scroll below.

1. You’ve bitten off more than you can chew: Losing a significant percentage of your body mass in one year just isn’t going to happen. A healthy goal for weight loss is about 1-2 pounds per week.

2. Expect something magical: You think that once the clock strikes midnight, you will magically stop sneaking rocky road in the middle of the night, smoking or better yet, fit into that favorite pair of distressed jeans you’ve had hanging in your closet since your early 20s. Like everything in life, you have to work hard to achieve these goals. You may fail six or seven times before you see change. The arrival of Jan. 1 doesn’t make this all go away.

3. You are surrounded by temptation: Having a pantry and fridge stocked with potato chips, pasta and frozen pizza isn’t going to help you stay on track if you plan on losing weight. Get rid of those pesky holiday sweets by gifting them to friends and loved ones. This isn’t to say that you can never indulge in the finer things of life (like chocolate) just remember one key word … moderation.

4. Unrealistic goals: Focus on one goal. By simplifying your list of resolutions, it will be easier to attain. Take it one step at a time…

5. Going in blind: Educate yourself. If you’re trying to lose weight, consider consulting a nutritionist about diet and exercise. We are all different and have different needs. While we see our favorite celebs drop 20 pounds a month by using the latest crash diet, eating lettuce and working out 2-3 hours a day may not be the right path for you.
