Enertia McFly talks musical inspirations and his new single, ‘Go To Twerk’

Los Angeles-based rapper Enertia McFly recently sat down with ro to discuss his new song and video, “Go To Twerk,” his musical inspirations, and what he’s learned working with Grammy Award-winning producers Play N Skillz and Black Eyed Peas frontman, will.i.am.

Who was your musical idol and why?
I’d have to say Timbaland. He literally created a whole new sound and made the entire world adapt to what he was and is doing. That’s really amazing to me.

If you had to do a concept album with one producer, who would it be and why?
Kanye West. Hands down he is one of, if not, the most creative and influential music makers in music today. There is no one touching [him]. I think we’d make an incredible project together.

What’s the best and worst thing about being a artist?
The best thing about being an artist is creating something that makes everyone lose it and fall in love with the song. There is no worst thing about being an artist to me. My love for music easily outweighs any negatives.

Name a song and album so good that you wish you’d written it.
As far as songs, I really wish I’d written Kanye’s “All Of The Lights.” If I had to pick an entire album I’d go with wanting to have written Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience.

Tell us about your latest single, “Go To Twerk.”
It’s the first single off my upcoming mixtape. It’s inspired by the lovely, thick woman that just loves to dance and make it move. It’s just one of those classic party records full of energy, 808s, and bars.

You worked with Grammy-winning producers Play N Skillz on the single and also worked with will.i.am recently as well. What are some of the things you’ve learned or picked up while working with them?
Man, I’ve picked up so many nuggets of knowledge from them. I’ve learned to not overthink records. If it sounds good and most importantly feels good, then it’s good to go. I’ve also been able to enhance the way I listen to songs and construct them. Taking an approach now as if I was the engineer and not the artist. It’s really been eye-opening.

How do you use social media to your advantage?
My goal is always to draw attention to my music. I say funny s— on my social sites every now and then just to keep people locked in, but in that post I’m pretty sure my music is the soundtrack or in the background of the funny s— I’m posting. Obviously I can’t be everywhere at once, so I make sure everyone is with me at once.

What is your creative process like?
I definitely have my own little ritual. All lights off in the studio, a strobe light going, some old ’70s porn playing on the screen, Snapple Apple, Gummy Worms, Mike & Ikes, and my phone because that’s where I write my music.

Name one thing fans would be surprised to know about you.
Believe it or not, I literally start to sweat when I see needles for shots. The killer part is I have that uneasiness with needles even though my body is fully tattooed.
