In somewhat of a stunning upset, musical comedy Pitch Perfect 2 outdueled both Mad Max: Fury Road and Avengers 2: Age of Ultron to capture the top spot at the weekend office.

With $70 million earned, a number that tops its predecessor’s entire theatrical run of $65 million, the ensemble a capella heavy comedy starring Rebel Wilson and Anna Kendrick made easy work of its closest competitor, Mad Max: Fury Road, which opened at $44 million. Fury Road, the first new movie for the franchise in more than 30 years, more or less met the expectations of a strong top three open as predicted by experts. Marvel’s  Avengers 2: Age Of Ultron fell to No. 3 but still mustered a strong $38 million to push its domestic take beyond Furious 7‘s. Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara’s buddy film, Hot Pursuit, placed fourth this week with $5.7 million in sales. And rounding out the top five, holding down the fifth spot for the second consecutive week was Kevin James’ Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, which earned an additional $3.6 million
