Aug. 6, marked the 53rd anniversary that Jamaica declared its independence from the United Kingdom. This Caribbean island is arguably one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Universally known for its exquisite rum, delicious cuisine and timeless music, this Patois nation is also home to some of history’s greatest artists, philosophers and atheletes.

There’s a common misconception that Jamaica is an island of a singular culture and race, but it’s actually a melting pot comprised of many different ethnic backgrounds such as African, Indian, Chinese, and those of Latin descent. Jamaica’s motto, “out of many, one people,” further highlights its richly diverse heritage.

In honor of Jamaica’s special day, let’s take a moment to check out some celebrities who are of Jamaican decent.
