BET and HBO presented the 19th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival at the AMC Empire 25 theater in NYC for a five-day showing of more than 80 independent documentaries, narratives, and shorts that highlighted some of the most intriguing aspects of contemporary urban culture. On the second day, radio duo Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia presented their film, Stretch and Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives.

The movie highlighted the impact that WKCR’s “The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show” had on hip-hop. During the show’s run from 1990 to 1998, a long list of undiscovered and unsigned rappers were given the platform to jump on the mic and freestyle for the show’s audience or even have their demo played.

Nas, Jay Z, Big Pun, DMX, Wu-Tang Clan, Talib Kweli, Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, Cam’ron, and the Fugees were among some of Armstrong and Garcia’s guests who went on to become huge stars. The documentary features previously unreleased footage from artists discussing the show’s impact, including Q-Tip, Eminem, Rosie Perez, and more.

Some of the most influential and notable radio personalities in urban entertainment were seen on the Urbanworld red carpet, including Angie Martinez, DJ Clark Kent, DJ Laura Stylez, and actors Dean Winters and Delila Vallot.
