Gang violence in Chicago: Native Chicagoans speak

Gang culture is embedded in the DNA of Chicago. A Google search will provide endless information about this culture. Names like Al Capone paint a romantic almost glamorous side of the culture that has been celebrated in film around the world. It said when Chicagoans travel abroad and mention where they come from the immediate connection is Al Capone and Michael Jordan.

Gang culture is not glamorous and at the root of it, from the perspective of our youth in Chicago, it only supplies death and sadness. Chicago is a buzz word these days. The adoption of the moniker Chiraq and pending release of Spike Lee’s movie of the same name have generated conversations across the country. Everyone has their unique view. We took some time to speak with some Chicago natives to provide us an understanding of what they think is going on in the city and how it can be solved.


We asked two questions.

1.What are your thoughts on the gang violence in Chicago?
