#StayMadAbby: Brilliant Twitter responses to Justice Scalia’s bigoted comments

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia disappointed a lot of Americans with his bias and bigotry this past Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, when a brief pointed out that most of the Black scientists in this country don’t come from schools like the University of Texas saying, “They come from lesser schools where they do not feel that they’re being pushed ahead in classes that are too fast for them.”

While he uttered inane comments about Black students’ capacities to fare well in predominantly white institutions, in support of white plaintiff Abigail Fisher who sued the University of Texas in 2008 for race discrimination, he gave justification to racial superiority.

“There are some who contend that it does not benefit African-Americans to get them into the University of Texas where they do not do well, as opposed to having them go to a less-advanced school, a slower-track school where they do well.” Scalia continued. “I’m just not impressed by the fact the University of Texas may have fewer [Black students]. Maybe it ought to have fewer.”

Black collegians banned together on social media with a celebratory Twitter hashtag, #StayMadAbby, where they are posting graduation pictures of themselves in caps and gowns, some featuring their Black Greek affiliations.
