Another year of fierce hair, beat faces and slayed models hit the runway for Glynn Jackson’s Golden Scissors Awards.

The Silver Spring Civic Building at Veterans Plaza was the venue for the 24th annual Golden Scissors Awards on Dec. 6 and this year’s theme was “Hair Mpact 2015.” The building was packed with celebrity hair stylists, designers, social media sensations and more. Guy Lambert from WPGC 95.5 rocked the mic with Glynn Jackson’s style narratives in the background.

The extravaganza’s first show kicked off at 2 p.m. with “Showbiz Kids of DC.” Youngsters strutted their stuff while helping raise funds through the event’s global 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Every ticket sold for the two o’clock show benefits their annual global commitment. The organization supports children locally and abroad in providing clothes, food and free haircuts.

The second show featured designers and hairstylists, and the finale was the infamous hair competition. Kira Dior Treasures, Fierce Virgin Hair Boutique and Hair by Peair all made appearances on the main stage. Meanwhile, Vernon Martin debuted his wig line with partner and gospel singer Erica Campbell; while Johnny Wright, who styles first lady Michelle Obama’s, won the Man of the Year Award.

Glynn Jackson awarded:

  • Sherritta Matthews (owner of Bnspired Salon),
  • Mary Hawkins (president of the National Beauty Cultists’ League DC)
  • Adrian Chew (master colorist for Clairol Professional Team)
  • Wanda Henderson (owner of Wanda’s on 7th)
  • Anwar Saleem (chairman of the District of Columbia Board of Barber and Cosmetology)
  • Acia Williams (2015 Golden Scissors First Lady Barber)

Among the honorees in the building, Mr. and Mrs. Dudley of Dudley’s Hair Products came to show their support. The esteemed and influential Black-owned business was also featured in the show. The evening’s performance was by Bianca Bonnie and guests included Lonnie B, DC Fashion Week creator Ian Williams and Instagram hair enthusiasts @Rock_Yo_Rio’s and @Your_Curlfriend.

Vendors included Regal Hair, ORS, Suds & Skin and HauteHair.

After 24 years, [the reason to keep this show alive is because] “… we’ve gotten to the age that when you look at the community, the most popular thing on television is an African American woman who goes to a gas station and twerks on a guy. And that makes national news, when all of these amazing sisters are doing these great and awesome things, and it gets no play. So here I am fighting like, almost an endless battle for people to see the value of what we’re doing … the journey is far easier when we come together and see the value in each other,” said Jackson.

Jackson helps produce the Latin Golden Scissors in Miami and the Evolution of Beauty show in the Bahamas. He’s also in talks to produce a television show “that shows quality programming” and is stoked about next year’s 25th Golden Scissors Awards anniversary. Jackson has promised a weeklong blowout nationally and internationally to celebrate the legacy of this annual event and looks forward to bringing it to a runway near you in December 2016.
