MLK Day celebrations were in abundance on the 30th anniversary of Dr. King’s national holiday, and Detroit had no shortages of celebrations, rallies and marches. Reverend Jesse L. Jackson Sr., founder and president of Rainbow/PUSH Global Automotive Project hosted a celebration in honor of Dr. King titled “Beyond the Dream,” which was held on Jan. 17-18, 2016. The two-day event took place at the beautifully remodeled Cobo Center atrium in downtown Detroit during the North American International Auto Show.

On Jan. 17, Grammy-nominated gospel legend Marvin Sapp performed before a packed house. News anchor Lauren Sanders served as the mistress of ceremonies. On Jan.18, Moss, Grammy Award-winning producer and 2016 Grammy-nominated co-producer (“Bruno Mars,” Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella) performed before another packed house. Journalist Bankole Thompson, distinguished columnist of the Detroit News, served as master of ceremonies. Also in attendance were dignitaries and Congress members John Conyers, Debbie Dingell, Brenda Lawrence and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

Reverend Jackson gave remarks on both days. During his keynote address on Monday, Jackson said, “Dr. King really challenged us to live beyond his dream. He was a doer of excellence and advocate of social, political and economic justice. Toward that end, we must strive for excellence in voter participation, education and violence repression. Dr. King died so that all lives would matter.”
