The Jerry Clark Foundation held its free 6th annual winter baseball camp this past weekend. The organization partnered with rolling out, Born to Compete, Dr. Maurice Jove with Excel Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine to spark metro Atlanta children’s interest in baseball by teaching them basic skills of the game.

The eager students were treated to learning from the best in the business. Major League Baseball player Edwin Jackson served as a guest instructor, as well as former MLB players Brian Jordan and Daryl Boston, and others.

The purpose of the foundation is to motivate children to excel in both academia and athletics. This is intended to help youth avoid making unproductive and troubling decisions such as dropping out of school or developing substance abuse problems.

Also, since baseball has become less popular among Black youth in recent years, the baseball camp exposes kids to the sport who may have otherwise been unlikely to learn about it at an early age.

“The camp is focused on improving fundamentals,” an official from The Jerry Foundation told rolling out. “Whether this is your first experience in baseball or you’re a seasoned travel ball player, fundamentals don’t change. The camp puts an emphasis on reinforcing skills.”
