From my seat on the Amtrak train, I observe nature. The mountains seem to reach above the clouds, rivers flow so far out, no end is in sight. On route to the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia, I have visions of pioneers and natives who once lived within this landscape, surviving without luxury or knowledge of what’s ahead. The moment that you get on the train, you are accommodated by the excellent staff of the Amtrak team. You know that they’re going to a special destination.

Amtrak’s route creates this beautiful connection between travel and history; transportation transports one between space and time as the world becomes alive with wonder from the windows of the train. Winter added to the spectacle as snow dazzled the landscape in a blanket of white.

The 18-hour trip for me included a private cabin that would accommodate a small family.

Arriving at Greenbrier continued the transport through time. The resort is an historical destination, a piece of Americana that ought not be forgotten. It is a part of the soul of America.

As a guest, I was treated with great care. The team at the resort specializes in catering to guests, as they have done so for nearly six decades. Families and dignitaries experience the same treatment at this lovely location. You join a country club of sorts when you come and check into the Greenbriar for it feels as though each person and the staff is there to serve the needs of your experience.

The accoutrements of the location, from brilliant shopping to every outdoor activity including phenomenal golf, keep visitors busy. Still, the place is calm in its approach. Technology, Wi-Fi and cellular service can wait, as you step back in time to enjoy great company and relaxation along with hiking, biking, sailing, rafting and swimming.

Tea time is also a highlight here. Guest gather and talk, taking in the atmosphere created by the historical custom. I also found every meal prepared beyond satisfaction.

When my visit was over, it was back to train, back to another journey as I climbed aboard and headed to another destination with Amtrak. Their routes will surely show me more of America.
