For weeks, all eyes were on Chris Rock as he decided to stay on as the host of this year’s Oscars despite the backlash over the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. On Sunday night, fans got to see how Rock handled the controversy with monologues about the Oscars’ diversity issue and even a joke with controversial actress Stacey Dash. However, one joke in particular that has fans divided is one in which Rock blasted Jada Pinkett Smith, who famously made a video months ago announcing that she was boycotting the Oscars for not nominating any Black actors over the past two years. Well, not only were some fans angry with Rock, but it looks like singer Tyrese was angry too because he recently blasted Rock online for speaking ill of Pinkett Smith.

As previously reported, during his Oscars hosting gig, Rock criticized Pinkett Smith’s boycott, which set off a domino effect of other Black fans and stars calling for protests of the Oscars.

“Jada got mad, Jada says she’s not coming, protesting, I’m like — doesn’t she have a TV show? Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited,” Rock said.

Yesterday, Tyrese went on Instagram and posted a video, criticizing Rock for taking shots at Pinkett Smith for sharing her disdain about the racism in the Academy.

“After Chris Rock done f—– my night up talking about my girl, Jada, who took the initiative to stand up and make a difference, I’m smiling again because of Leo!” Tyrese said with a yell in the video.

Tyrese continued to chastise Rock in the caption of his post, writing, “I didn’t watch — I didn’t — but online people are talking and someone posted the tasteless joke that Chris Rock did in his opening. Did you really use your STAGE to tear down and diminish one of the strongest most fearless black women IN this town as the world watched??? Jokes are just jokes right???? Not when someone is trying to affect change……… Not when someone is willing to put it ALL on the line to affect change for our daughters and sons of the future…….. Shame on you Chris Rock — Now let me run to YouTube and watch Leo’s acceptance speech………… So f—— proud of you Leo……”

Rock has yet to respond to Tyrese’s post, but we hope that if these two stars do end up having a real conversation about race, oppression and discrimination in the industry.

I think Chris did as good of a job as he could under the circumstances. He took shots at both sides.

    • The Truth on March 1, 2016 at 11:10 am

What circumstances? You mean the Oscars throwing a bone to blacks every now and then and getting their token AA’s to host and present awards to the white elite? Ok.

But why did shots need to be taken AT BOTH SIDES? Black people are not the oppressors and haven’t discriminated against, tortured, and maimed whites – so why take shots at them? Nor have blacks sat in positions of power withholding opportunities from qualified people, just because someone is white, especially not in Hollywood. Even with Will & Jada being the black elite with so-called “rich people problems,” they’re EXCEPTIONS and ANOMALIES! How about all of those white actors and actresses that have complained about wages and whatever else, and no one calls them out – even with their white privilege attached.

Chris failed. The Stacey Dash joke failed. The ratings were a fail. The dull humor directed at blacks was a fail. Chris went easy on all of those white (some highly unqualified) people in that room. He tiptoed around the responsibility of the Academy, how they vote, and make nominations. HE DIDN’T EVEN USE THAT FOR HIS MATERIAL! Chris didn’t even highlight the fact that a good handful of the nominees and movies weren’t even widely known or marketed until award season! He gave the “system” a pass in exchange for ridiculing his own, the oppressed.

That bit about ” grandmas being lynchings and swinging from trees” and the insulting of two black women in one “joke” (Jada Pinkett Smith & Rihanna) was tasteless, inappropriate, and unacceptable. Nothing was funny about blacks being lynched, and Chris gave all the white people an opportunity to laugh at that the horror that they’ve caused.

        Speak on it! THE TRUTH!

      • disqus_ZsmDHbsJLs on March 1, 2016 at 1:33 pm

Exactly. This why is why people need to go back and learn the word racist, racism, prejudice, etc. Blacks CAN NOT be racist because blacks can NOT oppress no one. If blacks could be racist, then why do blacks continue to fight for equal rights for jobs, housing, education, etc? If blacks could be racist, that means they have the same POWER and EQUAL ability to do the same oppression as whites because they think they are superior to another group. Blacks can be prejudice-a negative attitude toward another group based on race, religion, etc and some blacks have this PREJUDICE due to how blacks are treated and have been treated by some whites due to inequality, oppression, past history, and superior thinking by some whites. A black person can be just as smart as a white person but due to skin color a racist white person will think a white person can do the job better even if the white person is dumb and the black person is smart.

        I agree 100%

So Chris should have put his career on the line, while other black actors idly sit by? Okay. You understand he is a comedian, right? Everything is fair game.

  2. OhMyGodNO on March 1, 2016 at 1:00 pm

How do you expect Chris Rock to come out there and speak the truth against the Academy when the Academy was the one signing his check??? Him “speaking out” would have been him not taking the job in the first place. Looks like to me that black folks took one step back on that night.

  3. disqus_ZsmDHbsJLs on March 1, 2016 at 1:25 pm

I laughted at the jokes but the Jada joke fail. Chris Admitted Hollywood is racist YET he made fun of Jada for speaking out. Also, Jada was invited because Will was invited. This is like making fun of someone who calls out a Bully and then you turn around and say that the Bully was wrong.

Do people actually pay to see Tyrese, or do they just see him because he lucked out in being cast in Fast and Furious franchise?

    • Jae on March 2, 2016 at 8:40 am

He is actually a very good singer.

  7. Yvette on March 1, 2016 at 5:33 pm

Chris was hilarious and it was a joke, Jada.shouldn’t be offended. Was she invited?
He did a good job to addressing the severity of the lack of jobs for blacks, well people of color in general. He straight up called Hollywood racist in a sense that these are liberals who “so called” believe in equality yet don’t hire blacks. How did that escape people?

He did well as Hollywood expected. The only problem I had was with one skit which suppose to be at a Compton theater, which really look like the formerly Magic Johnson Theater (now Cinemark Rave Theater in Los Angeles. City of Compton do not have a movie theater. I was watching a major television network who was praising all the jokes and they said “Oh he even had a scene in Compton”. We did have the Straight out of Compton movie filmed in Compton, but currently no movie theater. Just as fast as he raise the money of $65,000 for girl scout cookies during the Oscar show, he could raise money for a movie theater, so maybe Compton could have a theater instead of making a joke of black movie patrons, because they did not have very little knowledge of the movies that were nominated for the academy awards, except straight out of Compton..

Rock did his things like usual it’s the lost negro who have an issue!

Tyrese needs to get a grip and especially stop overrating this stand by Jada who for years has been riding the coattails of her husband’s now fading career. I would prefer to get insight from true black hollywood royalty on how to address this going forward…..the likes of Poiter, Belafonte, Denzel, Morgan, Samuel L., Angela B., Cicely, and Gossett. There was something in Jada’s message that appeared too self serving and disingenuous and sure enough you have those like Tyrese who swallow all of it hook line and sinker. No thanks.
