For over a decade, the Black History and Cultural Showcase has served as an event to highlight the important role that Black Americans have contributed to this nation.

On March 26-27, the annual free event was held at the Philadelphia Convention Center. Guest speakers included Black Panthers Bobby Seale, Olympic Champion John Carlos, and author Molefi Kete Asante. Exhibits included the Black Writer’s Museum; Black History in the Press; Tuskegee Airmen; and National Coalition of 100 Black Women to name a few. There were also performances by an African dance ensemble.

Everett Staten, founder of Black History and Cultural Showcase, spoke about the mission of the event and its impact. “We started in 2004 and our mission has always been to provide an event that celebrates African-American history,” Staten said. “We believe the more one knows, the better impact on self-esteem and pride. For those who are not black, it’s important for them to learn the contributions of African-Americans. Overall, It helps race relations. The idea is to inspire and have a positive impact.”
