Among the most important things I learned while growing up Black is this sage advice: when you’re eating crabs with a group, it’s every man for himself. Go for yours. Your own mother will leave you out in the cold to fend for yourself if a fresh pot of crab legs is set on the table before a gaggle of hungry Black folks.

I guess a crab-loving couple took the “fend for yourself” lesson a little too far. The two, Clifford Knight, 46, and his wife, Latoya Knight, 38, were arrested at a Connecticut restaurant recently for assaulting a man over crab legs.

The foolishness began at 8 p.m. at the Royal Buffet in Manchester. The Windsor couple got into a verbal disagreement with the victim, 21, while at the crab leg buffet. Things escalated, a physical altercation ensued, and at some point one of the Knights punched the victim in his face, knocking out his front tooth, WVIT-TV reported.

But the fracas didn’t stop there. Apparently, the real fighter here is the victim’s mother, who was armed with pepper spray. While attempting to help her fallen son, she sprayed the violent crab leg lovers to get them away from him.

When officers arrived, they arrested the Knights. Clifford Knight has been charged with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct. Latoya Knight has been charged with disorderly conduct and threatening. Both have been released on non-surety bonds. They’re due back in court on April 14.

The victim’s mother will not face any charges for using pepper spray.

So, what do you all think? Is this simply a case of “the crab legs made me do it” and everyone is just tripping? Or should these two really go to the clink for messing up the crab legs joint? Sound off in the comments below.
