Ciara may have turned the page in her personal life, finding new love with NFL star Russell Wilson, but her past with ex-fiance Future is not as far behind her as she would like.

As previously reported, on May 17, the “Dance Like We’re Making Love” songstress showed up in a California court asking for sole custody of their 1-year-old son, baby Future Zahir Wilburn. However, despite claims Future is an absentee father – not to mention all the times he’s slammed her on social media, CiCi’s claim was denied, reports TMZ. In fact, Future showed face and requested joint custody, which according to the judge, seemed to be a favorable request.

Meanwhile, the tension between the exes continues to grow. As fans know far too well, it appears the former friends and lovers have lost sight of the bigger picture: creating a healthy co-parenting situation for their child. Although we don’t know the inner workings of their situation. One thing’s for sure, the parents have provided one epic lesson in what not to do when co-parenting. For starters:

Never deny a willing parent the opportunity to see their child – Sure, Future appears to have the maturity of a pre-teen when it comes to handling rejection. However, no one can replace him as baby Future’s father. Not CiCi’s dad nor Wilson. If Future (being dubbed a fit parent) desires to spend time with his son, whether it be a trip to the park, summer getaway or pick-ups from school, he should be allowed to do so.

Never air out your dirty laundry to the press – In today’s society, there’s no such thing as a “take back.” Every juicy tweet is screenshot, saved and passed around for eternity. Unfortunately for the pair, they’ve already crossed this threshold throwing subliminal shade at each other during interviews and blasting each other on Twitter. While Future is just a child, should these two continue this behavior, it could very well sabotage the child’s relationship with either parent.

Don’t respond to threats with lawsuits – This is beyond petty. At some point, one needs to let go of their pride, put aside the beef they have with their ex, forgive, communicate, and move on for the benefit of the child. Unfortunately for Ciara and Future, they have drawn out the drama by slapping each other with defamation suits.
