Real Men Cook did it for 15 years, feeding and connecting dads and families every Father’s Day. This year, a new food and entertainment bazaar took over the Georgia Freight Depot this Father’s Day on Sunday, June 19, 2016 transforming it into a foodie’s paradise for an advanced ticket price of only $25. There were nearly 100 men cooking, and some female chefs, serving hundreds of Atlantans at the 2016 Family Food Fest Atlanta, a single-day event. The culinary celebration featured delights prepared by private caterers, restaurant owners, celebrity chefs and even food truck entrepreneurs. Serving up samples was Gus’s Fried Chicken, which was recently named the during an Atlanta Journal Constitution survey as the restaurant serving the Best Fried Chicken in Atlanta among a host of others.

“Dancing with the Stars” and “Real Housewives of Atlanta’s” Kim Fields served as a host and DJ Fadelf deejayed. In another room, a relationship panel was hosted by Sheen Magazine’s publisher Kimberly Chapman and editor-in-chief Sammi Haynes. There was a also a health fair conducting blood pressure screenings, eye exams and on-sight massages, courtesy of Vibrant Health Center. Home Depot hosted a kids workshop. Cotton candy, snow cones and Italian ice were served to sweeten us up and cool us off outside.

While my tastebuds were doing a happy dance after tasting D’Liteful Drinks & Smoothies’ custom-flavored agave tropical lemonade, Fulton County’s Sheriff’s Department tender pulled pork and Makeba Matthews’ red velvet and carrot cake samples, Chef Chez Montier led an on-site demonstration on how to prepare Maki, a Japanese dish consisting of sushi and raw vegetables wrapped in seaweed.

Other food offerings included Japanese styled deviled eggs, salmon croquette bites served with baked cinnamon apples, penne pasta stuffed with Blue crabs and cheese, traditional soul food meals – baked chicken, dressing, collard greens and turnip greens – and and the list goes on.
