If you feel helpless, but want to play a small part in easing the burden of #AltonSterling’s family, consider donating to this scholarship fund for his 15-year-old son (and his other kids).

*ALL* funds raised will go to Alton Sterling’s family.

Actress Issa Rae is not related to the Alton Sterling and she wrote on the GoFundMe campaign page she’s “sympathetic and empathetic.”

These two sentences written in the description of the #AltonSterlingFamily Scholarship Go Fund Me page were so impactful, following the senseless and heartbreaking murder of a Baton Rouge, Louisiana father, son and brother. Alton Sterling, 37, was fatally shot by police on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 because someone complained that he had a gun. Louisiana is an Open Carry state that places very few, to no restrictions, on owning or carrying a gun. But that didn’t matter to Baton Rouge officers Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake II. Both of the men have been placed on paid administrative leave following the fatal shooting. They both “believe they were completely justified in using deadly force,” East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar C. Moore III said at a press conference.

Sterling, affectionately known as the CD Man, was selling CDs outside the Triple S Food Mart, at the corner of Fairfields Avenue and North Foster Drive.

State Rep. Denise Marcelle said she was told by Baton Rouge Police Chief Dabadie the body cameras worn by both officers fell off during the incident and didn’t record the shooting. Marcelle also learned there is footage of the shooting from the dashboard camera of one of the patrol cars as well as from at least one store surveillance camera.

Moore predicts the investigations will take at least four weeks to obtain all investigative and scientific results.

After the donations starting flooding in the post was updated to read:

Wow! $100k in 6 hours. This is so powerful. Can we get to $200k? I’m doubling my pledge.

That would be $40k for each of his 5 kids to go to college. Thank you all for uniting through the pain.
