The Betty Shabazz international Charter School is a network of African Centered Charter Schools. The schools blend African cultural influences within the schools’ curriculum. Barbara A. Sizemore Academy, Dusable Leadership Academy and Betty Shabazz Academy are the three schools that make up the network. Their annual fundraiser was recently held at The Promontory in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago.

The house was jam-packed with supporters for the evening. There was a silent auction for some art work, and information as to how one could donate was shared during the evening.

Last year’s musical guest was The Foreign Exchange and it was amazing. This year the skills of the all-female group KING were enlisted and their angelic voices reverberated throughout the venue. The members of KING: Amber Strother, Paris Strother and Anita Bias, came to the stage in bright red kimonos and immediately got to work serving beautiful melodies effortlessly. Strother mentioned how they were honored to be invited to perform for such a great cause. At one point during the evening they sang “Hey” one of their most well-known selections for a friend who recently died, and they said it was his favorite song. The friend they were speaking of was Prince. Prince helped to launch their career.

The evening proved to be a shift in vibration with regard to the current climate in the world right now. The voices of KING and the mission of The Betty Shabazz International Charter School worked together to form a good feeling.
