Twitter reacts to Lil Wayne’s retirement announcement

“I am defenseless and mentally defeated. I leave gracefully and thankful I luh my fans but I’m dun,” tweets Lil Wayne. The New Orleans-born rapper announced in the wee hours Saturday morning, Sept. 3, that he is possibly retiring.

It’s not a joke or a ploy for attention. The 33-year-old tells his fans via Twitter that he seeking “serenity.” Industry vet Mali Hunter chimed in and offered her support writing, “@LilTunechi This business will tear Ur spirit apart if you let it!I’ve spent over a decade Killin demons and helping free frenz minds! I’m Praying 4 U!”


Wayne performed in Louisiana on August 27, 2016. The Lil Weezyana Fest streamed live on TIDAL in support of efforts to raise funds for victims of the Louisiana floods.

Last Fall, the Young Money rapper filed a grievance against his estranged label home with claims that the Louisiana-based label has not only been stealing money from him, but also his fellow Young Money artists Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga.

In December 2014, Wayne publicly demanded to be let go from the label. He and Cash Money have engaged in a long and drawn out war of words and legal maneuvering that culminated with the April 2015 shooting of Wayne’s tour bus that many speculated may have involved Cash Money Records head Bryan “Baby” Williams.

The label faced a slew of lawsuits for unpaid monies due, including pending litigation from former artist Turk, producer Bangladesh, and industry veterans Jas Prince and Wendy Day.
